how we work
What makes us different…
All of our projects have a distinctive signature — a beautiful, natural, one-of-a-kind environment that enhances the client's home and property. Client satisfaction remains the hallmark of our business, as evidenced by the long-term relationships we build with our clients and contractors. Because of those relationships, our business has grown almost solely by word of mouth.
When you choose e. k. smith landscape design, you can expect the best in:
- Designs with the long-term beauty and sustainability of your property in mind
- Coordination of all aspects of "hardscape" and "soft" landscaping
- Talented professionals who comprise our committed workforce and derive satisfaction from a job well done
- Fully integrated turn-key service, from project design to completion
e.k. smith landscape design manages the construction and installation of your project from start to finish in order to ensure the integrity and quality of our designs. Potential clients receive a complimentary in-office one-hour consultation to discuss the scope of their project, the design process, timeline, budget and fee structure. This is followed by a second consultation during which Elise will come to your property and identify all of the elements of your project so that a budget can be established. This process ensures that all parties are fully comfortable moving forward.
Phase I – Assessment
- Meet with the client to determine the scope and scale of the project
- Create a site assessment (including water, drainage, traffic patterns, safety, and aesthetics)
- Work with the client to establish a realistic budget and timetable
Phase II – Design
- As the design phase unfolds, Elise will provide several options for the "hardscape" design work. Once the client approves this phase, she then completes the final construction drawings so that the various contractors that will install the project can submit their bids. The design process also includes all plant material landscape lighting and irrigation.
Phase III – Project Management
- Finalize project details
- Send out bids to contractors and review prices with clients
- Put project on a timeline — include start & completion dates
- Manage all facets of installation and construction
- Obtain all permits
Phase IV - Installation and Construction
- Schedule and coordinate all contractors
- Visit site frequently to ensure progress and maintain quality
- Maintain constant dialogue with both the client and the contractors
- Ensure continuity through completion
Billing
Our billing process is structured so that there are no unpleasant surprises along the way. At our initial meeting, we forecast the project's cost and create a realistic budget. We want to make sure our clients are fully aware of exactly how their money is being spent. Therefore, we invoice at various stages of the project, documenting hours and materials devoted to each component.
